About the walk

This route of the Outlying Wainwright Fells above Staveley takes in several of the summits that comprise Potter Fell. En route, you are treated to a number of scenic little tarns, serene trails and wonderful views of the higher fells.

Starting and finishing at Staveley Station - less than a ten-minute train ride from Kendal, the hike heads north through the village, cross the River Kent and begins to ascend towards the sprawling Potter Fell. Rising between the Kent and the River Sprint, Potter Fell is a ‘wild tangle’ – as Wainwright put it – of hillocks, gorgeous heather, rocky outcrops, and grass, its flanks liberally sprinkled with little tarns. Potter Fell has four distinct summits, two of which are nameless. The route seeks them out, starting with Ulgraves and finishing on the highest, Brunt Knott.

Events timings and meeting points:

  • 10 am Meet at the Komoot stand at the Brewery Arts Centre Kendal for the free shuttle to Staveley (leaving at 10.15 am) or meet 10.45 am at Staveley Train Station

  • 3 pm Free shuttle back to Kendal from Staveley Train Station

There will be the option for a free shuttle bus return between Kendal and Staveley, leaving Kendal at 10.15am and returning at 3pm. You’ll have the option to sign up for this in the week leading up to the Festival. Otherwise, we suggest travelling to Staveley by public transport.
