The route

BMC members are invited to join a peer-led walk, hosted by BMC Peak Area volunteers, with local BMC volunteer Paul Justin guiding the route. This social walk will start from Hayfield and explore the western end of the Kinder Scout plateau. We’re excited to welcome you for a memorable day in the outdoors!  We’ll decide on the exact route closer to the day but the plan is to take the Snake Pass, White Brown and William Clough route onto Kinder, exploring the Northern Edge, returning via the Downfall and Cluther Rocks.

Distance: Approx. 18 km (11.5 miles) max

Ascent: 520 m (1,700 ft) max

Duration: Approximately 6-7 hours

BMC members will be asked to wear usual clothing appropriate for a day walking in the hills and bring their own food and drink for a full hill day.

Travelling to and from the event

Public Transport

Check local bus schedules via Bus Travel Derbyshire for public transport options.

Hayfield is served by the Bee Network 358 Stockport - Hayfield bus and the High Peak Buses 60 Macclesfield to Hayfield and 61 Buxton to Glossop services. These bus routes pass through New Mills on the Sheffield - Manchester train line.

What to bring

We’ll cover a range of terrains, so please ensure you are well-prepared with appropriate gear:

Footwear:  On parts of the walk we’ll encounter rough/boggy underfoot conditions, so sturdy, water-resistant hiking boots or shoes with good traction are essential and gaiters might prove useful.

Clothing: Dress in layers, including waterproofs, as conditions can vary; bring a hat and gloves.  It can be a lot colder on the Kinder plateau than Hayfield.

Food and Drink: Bring enough food and water for a full day’s hike; there will be no places to purchase refreshments once we’ve started the walk.

Other Essentials: Although we plan to finish within daylight hours, carrying a small torch or head torch is advisable for emergencies.

Participant Information:

This walk is open to BMC members, accompanying friends and family, and anyone interested in BMC’s work, under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

All participants must book in advance.

Please do not attend if you have COVID-19 or are feeling unwell.

Health Considerations:

If you have health issues that might affect your ability to complete the walk safely, inform us in advance. Carry any necessary medications and inform the leader where they are located if needed.

BMC Participation Statement:

This is an approved BMC event.

The BMC recognizes that climbing, hill walking, and mountaineering are activities with inherent risks. Participants should be aware of and accept these risks and be responsible for their own actions and involvement.
