BMC Technical Committee
About the BMC Technical Committee
The Technical Committee provides the BMC with engineering expertise around product and equipment safety for equipment used in activities relating to climbing, hillwalking and mountaineering.
Members of the Technical Committee were instrumental in preparing the original UIAA standards for climbing equipment which were subsequently adopted as the first Euro Norm Standards for mountaineering equipment. Their contribution to the development of Euro Norms and UIAA standards continues via CEN/TC 136/WG5 and the UIAA Safety Commission respectively.
The committee’s other activities include:
- Producing resources which educate and inform participants and members of the community about the maintenance, usage and disposal of equipment used for climbing, mountaineering and hillwalking activities.
- Support for the investigation of equipment failures.
- Publicising manufacturer recalls and requests for inspection.
- Responding to government consultations which might affect the safety, cost, or availability of equipment.
- Technical advice in support of BMC managed activities such as climbing competitions.
- Assistance to companies in recognising counterfeit equipment so it can be removed from sale.
- Acting as an interface between the BMC and equipment manufacturers.
The format of the committee’s output is adapted to the purpose, but over the years it has included magazine articles, guidance documents, web articles, videos, TV appearances and presentations at relevant conferences.
