With the Easter Bank Holiday approaching and more people than ever heading to the hills, the British Mountaineering Council (BMC) is echoing a vitally important message from Mountain Rescue England and Wales (MREW): be prepared, be informed, and don’t rely on your phone alone.

Newly released data from MREW, visualised in partnership with Ordnance Survey (OS), highlights some key trends in rescue activity across the country - including a 24% rise in callouts since 2019 and a notable shift in the age group most often needing assistance. For the first time, 18 to 24 year olds are the most rescued group, overtaking older demographics.

This shift has been linked to the increasing popularity of social media hotspots and the widespread use of mobile navigation apps, which may not always offer the detail or reliability needed in remote and mountainous areas.

Tom Carrick, the BMC’s Access Officer for Wales and Mountain Rescue volunteer, said:

“It’s great to see people enjoying the outdoors – we know how beneficial it is for both physical and mental health. But with so much influence from social media, many people heading into the mountains haven’t had the chance to look at the skills they need for a good day. Often, videos show perfect weather, but the reality can be very different. People can get caught out by fast-changing conditions or may not realise how much the weather can differ between valley and the summits.

“Mountain rescue volunteers will always do what they can – without judgement – to help those in need, however, there is real concern about the increasing demands being placed on teams.”

Josh Harris, BMC Hill Walking Coordinator, said:

“Exploring our hills, moors and mountains offers a powerful sense of freedom and connection. These wild places are open to all but best enjoyed with the right knowledge and respect. Having the skills to plan, stay safe and make good decisions means you’re more likely to end the day with great memories, not mishaps."

Cress Allwood, BMC Partnerships Manager and qualified Mountain Leader, said:

“In addition to checking weather apps, a few moments packing your bag with the right bits of kit, may be a game changer. The BMC has a whole host of resources on our website which will give you a bit of guidance on what to take.

“We want as many people as possible to be accessing the outdoors but in the safest possible ways; the more people we can inspire the better.”

2024: A record year for mountain rescue teams

MREW volunteers were called out every single day in 2024. The busiest teams – including Llanberis, Ogwen Valley, Keswick, and Edale – have been responding to multiple incidents in a day, sometimes as many as six.

With 3,842 total callouts across England and Wales in 2024, and 78% of incidents occurring after midday, this sustained level of activity places huge demands on mountain rescue teams, who are entirely made up of unpaid volunteers balancing rescue work with jobs, families, and everyday commitments.

Last year, Good Friday was the single busiest day for outdoor activity, according to data from the OS Maps app – a pattern that looks set to continue this Easter.

Adventure safety tips from the BMC

As more people discover the joy and freedom of the outdoors, it’s vital we all take a few simple steps to stay safe. Whether you’re heading out for a short walk or a full day in the hills, these top tips will help you out:

  • Plan your route in advance and check the mountain weather forecast
  • If you are using your mobile phone, make sure you know the limits.
  • Tell someone where you’re going and what time you expect to return.
  • Take plenty of layers, good footwear, plenty of food and water, a small first aid kit and a torch just in case your day is longer than you think.
  • Know your limits, if you’re unsure, consider hiring a guide or joining a hiking or mountaineering club. This way you’ll gain the skills and experience to enjoy the mountains further.
  • Don’t be afraid to turn back, the mountains will always be there.
