You are invited to join a peer-led walk, hosted by BMC Area volunteers/members of the BMSCMC, an affiliated climbing and mountaineering club, with local BMC volunteer Jim McCall, of the BMSCMC, guiding the route.

This social walk will explore a circular walk from Haytor Visitor Centre, taking in 6 tors, including Haytor, Hound Tor, a medieval settlement, a local wild swimming spot and the infamous granite tramway. We’re excited to welcome you for a memorable day in the outdoors!

The BMSCMC is a climbing and mountaineering club, affiliated to the BMC. We are a small but extremely active club and are keen on all mountain activities, and mountain, moor and coastal walking. Facilities: Toilets are available at the car park

Public Transport: No public transport running this early in the day. However, there are buses from Bovey Tracey on the afternoon before and wild camping is available on Dartmoor, within 500m of the visitor centre, LINK HERE

The route

Walk Grading: Moderate

Distance: Approx. 15 km (9.5 miles)

Ascent: 570m (1,870 ft)

Duration: Approx. 5.5 hours (including 4 x 10 minute breaks, one every 60 minutes)

If you or anyone in your party can’t attend after booking, please let us know so we can offer the place to others.

What to bring

We’ll cover a range of terrains, so please ensure you are well-prepared with appropriate gear:

Footwear: Sturdy, water-resistant hiking boots or shoes with good grip

Clothing: Dress in layers, including a warm layer and waterproofs, as conditions can vary; bring a hat and gloves for cooler areas

Food and Drink: Bring enough food and water for a full day’s hike; there will be no places to purchase refreshments en route… (Well… that’s not strictly true… there might be an ice cream van at Hound Tor… don’t count on it though)

Other Essentials: Although we plan to finish within daylight hours, carrying a small torch or head torch is advisable for emergencies

Who can attend

Anyone, Under 18's must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Well behaved dogs are welcome but must be kept under close control at all times, please indicate on your booking if you will be bringing a dog

Health Precautions: If you have any health conditions that might impact your participation, please inform us in advance. Carry any required medications, and let the walk leader know if assistance may be needed in accessing them

Please do not attend if you feel unwell or have Covid-19 symptoms
