BMC members are invited to join a social hike, with local BMC volunteer Nicola Merrett guiding the route. This social walk will be a 12km circular route starting from Glenridding. We’re excited to welcome you for a memorable day in the outdoors!

Glenridding, Swirral Edge and Striding Edge

Meeting point and start time

Time: Tuesday 20th May, 9:00 am for a 9:30 am start

Location: Beckside Car Park, Glenridding, Nr Penrith, CA11 0PA

Parking: Pay and display; payment options include cash or the PayByPhone app. Alternative parking at Patterdale Cricket Field, £5 for the community. 7 minute walk to Glenridding.

Route

Walk Grading: Challenging

Distance: Approx. 12 km (7.5 miles)

Ascent: 850m (2,800 ft)

This social walk will start from Glenridding up onto Swirral Edge and returning via Striding Edge and back down to Glenridding via Lanty’s Tarn. If however participants are uneasy with Striding Edge due to weather conditions, we will return via Lower Man and Raise descending via Sticks Pass. We’re excited to welcome you for a memorable day in the outdoors!

What to bring

We’ll cover a range of terrains, so please ensure you are well-prepared with appropriate gear:

Footwear: Sturdy, water-resistant hiking boots or shoes with good grip

Clothing: Dress in layers, including waterproofs with taped seams and hood as conditions can vary. Please bring an emergency mid-layer

Hat and gloves

If you bring hiking poles, please make sure these can be collapsed away as they are a hazard on the Helvellyn Edges. We can supply poles which fold into 4 sections for anyone wishing to borrow these, please email nicola@hikinghighs.co.uk with your height

Food and Drink: Bring enough food and water for a full day’s walk; there will be no places to purchase refreshments en route

Other Essentials: Although we plan to finish within daylight hours, carrying a small torch or head torch is required for emergencies for this walk

Who can join:

Anyone, Under 18's must be accompanied by a parent or guardian on a 1-2-1 basis.

Health Precautions: If you have any health conditions that might impact your participation, please inform us in advance. Carry any required medications, and let the walk leader know if assistance may be needed in accessing them

Covid-19: Please do not attend if you feel unwell or have Covid-19 symptoms

All participants must book in advance.

Health Considerations:

If you have health issues that might affect your ability to complete the walk safely, inform us in advance. Carry any necessary medications and inform the leader where they are located if needed.
