The British Mountaineering Council (BMC) will this weekend host its International Summer Meet in Llanberis, North Wales, bringing together climbers from around the world for a week of shared climbing and exchange in Eryri National Park.

The meet runs from 13 – 21 June and will welcome 20 climbers representing 12 international federations. Participants are travelling from across Europe, as well as further afield, including Hong Kong, South Africa and South Korea.

Based in Llanberis, the meet is centred on shared days in the mountains and crags of North Wales, with visiting climbers joining UK hosts to explore the wide variety of traditional climbing venues in the area. For many participants, the week provides an introduction to UK mountain environments, where access, conditions and style of climbing can differ significantly from their home countries. From mountain rhyolite to Gogarth quartzite, coastal limestone and UNESCO-recognised slate, the area offers a diverse range of climbing in a relatively compact area.

Alongside time on rock, the meet includes informal evening sessions, including a Gala dinner at Plas y Brenin National Outdoor centre, designed to encourage discussion between different climbing cultures and national bodies, as well as a chance to share experiences from home climbing areas.

Dominic Oughton, President of the BMC, said:

"The BMC’s International Summer Meet is a chance for people from very different climbing backgrounds to come together in one place and spend a week in the hills and crags of North Wales. It’s informal, it’s practical and it’s rooted in the kind of shared experience that defines our sport - whether that’s on rock, in the mountains or around the table afterwards. Most of all, it’s a celebration of climbing and an opportunity to build connections across our global family, which are so important in these challenging geopolitical times.”

The BMC says the meet also helps strengthen relationships between international federations and supports wider understanding of climbing and hill walking culture in the UK.

The International Summer Meet is part of the BMC’s wider programme of international engagement, working with the UIAA (the International Climbing and Mountaineering Federation) aimed at supporting participation, exchange and connection across the global climbing and mountaineering community.
