Seventeen athletes from GB Climbing will take to the walls this week as the IFSC World Climbing Championships begin in Seoul, marking a major milestone in the sport’s journey towards the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The Championships which span nine days, will see British climbers compete across Boulder, Lead, and Paraclimbing disciplines.

In the Paraclimbing event starting tomorrow (20 September), GB Climbing will field athletes across five classifications, with a particularly strong presence in the AU2 category. In the men’s field, James Rudge and Sebastian Musson are both familiar faces in finals, with Musson claiming bronze earlier this season in Salt Lake City. In the women’s AU2 category, Bella Walsh returns for her sixth World Championships, having represented GB at every edition since 2016.

Ahead of the qualifying round, Walsh said:

“It’s so cool being out here in Seoul for my sixth Paraclimbing World Championships. I’ve been training really well since Innsbruck [World Cup] where I just narrowly missed out on finals. I’m excited to see what I can do on the routes out here"

Among the headline names is 20-year-old Erin McNeice, who will contest both the Boulder and Lead Championship titles. McNeice has enjoyed a standout season, where she collected multiple medals and secured the overall Lead World Cup title.

She will be joined in the women’s Boulder competition by Emma Edwards and Zoë Peetermans. Edwards, in her debut senior season, has impressed with standout performances including claiming gold at the European Boulder Cup in Brussels and finishing fifth in her first World Cup final in Prague. Peetermans also delivered a strong showing this year, with a season-best 18th place at the World Cup in Curitiba.

Toby Roberts, the reigning Olympic champion, will be the only British male athlete competing in Lead event. He will also feature in the men’s Boulder event alongside Dayan Akhtar, Hamish McArthur, and Jack MacDougall.

Dr Laura Needham, Head of Performance at the BMC, said:

“This is a significant moment for the sport. It’s the first World Championships of the LA cycle and the first since paraclimbing was confirmed as a Paralympic discipline. We’re proud to be sending a team that reflects the depth and strength of British climbing, and it’s a credit to the athletes, coaches and support teams who’ve worked hard to get here.
