Mae BMC yn cofleidio enwau hanesyddol, Cymreig yn Chwareli Dinorwig
Yn 2024, mae BMC Cymru (adran Cymreig y Cyngor Mynydda Prydain) wedi bod yn cydweithio’n weithredol â grwpiau lleol i archwilio enwau lleoedd hanesyddol Chwarel Dinorwig, sydd yn ardal ddringo boblogaidd.
Mae'r fenter hon yn adlewyrchu cydnabyddiaeth gynyddol o bwysigrwydd cadw enwau lleol fel ffordd o anrhydeddu hanes a diwylliant ardal. Dysgwch fwy am hanes Chwareli Dinorwig yma.
Eglura Swyddog Mynediad and Cadwraeth i Gymru, Tom Carrick:
"Yn ystod y blynyddoedd diwethaf, mae'r symudiad i gofleidio enwau traddodiadol wedi casglu momentwm. Er enghraifft, mae'r enw Cymraeg, Eryri yn cael ei ddefnyddio fwyfwy yn lle'r Saesneg, "Snowdonia”, yn ogystal â'r Wyddfa yn hytrach na “Snowdon”. Nid yw'r patrwm yma’n gyfyngedig i Gymru; mae'n atseinio'n rhyngwladol, gydag enwau fel Uluru a Denali yn cael eu cydnabod fwyfwy yn Awstralia ac Alaska, gan ddisodli'r trefedigaethol Ayers Rock a Mount McKinley . Yn Seland Newydd, mae deiseb gref i fabwysiadu enw Māori y wlad, Aotearoa, yn swyddogol, yn ennill momentwm.
"Fel rhan o'r ymdrech hon yn Chwareli Dinorwig, ymgynghorodd y BMC â Cadw (yr awdurdod sy’n gyfrifol am warchod amgylchedd hanesyddol Cymru), Comisiwn Brenhinol Henebion Cymru, a nifer o grwpiau lleol. Mae'r BMC yn cefnogi cadw enwau hanesyddol ar ardaloedd dringo ac yn credu y gall yr enwau hyn gydfodoli ochr yn ochr ag enwau llinellau dringo presennol, sydd yn aml â threftadaeth gyfoethog, os yn fwy diweddar, yn gysylltiedig â nhw.
"Cyrhaeddwyd agwedd gytbwys: bydd rhestr hierarchaidd o enwau lleoedd yn cael ei chreu, gan flaenoriaethu'r enwau mwyaf arwyddocaol yn hanesyddol ar y brig. Mae'r dull hwn yn sicrhau bod enwau hanesyddol yn cael eu cadw heb ddileu eraill. Mae'n cydnabod mai cyn i ddringo ddod yn weithgaredd amlwg yng ngogledd Cymru, y diwydiant llechi a luniodd dirwedd yr ardal.
"Mae cofio hanes yn hanfodol - mae'n dysgu gwersi, yn dathlu diwylliant, ac yn ein cysylltu â'n gorffennol. I gymunedau lleol, mae'r enwau hyn yn ein hatgoffa o'r llafur caled a ddioddefwyd yn y chwareli, lle'r oedd llawer o weithwyr yn wynebu amodau peryglus ac yn aml yn colli eu bywydau. Mae’r BMC hefyd yn pwysleisio pwysigrwydd cadw hanes mwy diweddar dringo yng ngogledd Cymru. Mae dringfeydd a sefydlwyd dros 50 mlynedd yn ôl yn adrodd eu straeon eu hunain ac yn haeddu cydnabyddiaeth ochr yn ochr ag etifeddiaeth y diwydiant llechi.
"Rydym yn eich gwahodd i ymuno â ni i ddefnyddio’r y enwau gwreiddiol a ddefnyddiwyd gan y chwarelwyr, wedi'u hymchwilio hyd eithaf gallu'r tîm (cafeat: roedd rhai gwahaniaethau rhwng yr enwau a ddefnyddir gan wahanol weithwyr). Nid geiriau yn unig ydyn nhw; maen nhw'n deyrnged i'r rhai a aberthodd cymaint, gan ennill cyflog prin wrth gerflunio'r chwareli i'r hyn rydyn ni'n ei weld ac yn mwynhau dringo arno heddiw.
“Yn isod mae mapiau a ddatblygwyd gyda chymorth sefydliadau lleol, gan gynnwys cyfraniadau gan Rockfax a Rob Johnson.
"Mae llawer o'r enwau, fel Awstralia a California, yn adlewyrchu digwyddiadau byd-eang eu cyfnod. Er enghraifft, enwyd ponc Califfornia yn ystod cyfnod y Rhuthr Aur, pan fyddai gweithwyr wedi clywed am y digwyddiad. Roedd Awstralia, un o'r ponciau, mor anghysbell nes bod ei gyrraedd yn teimlo fel taith i ochr arall y byd. Enwyd Ponc Toffat ar ôl y lleoliad beibliadd, oherwydd ei amodau gwaith creulon, sy'n debyg i'r cysyniad beiblaidd o dân uffern. Mae’r enwau yn ffynhonnell o straeon cyfoethog, gan ein cysylltu â bywydau a dychymyg y bobl a fu unwaith yn llafurio yno.
“Hoffwn estyn diolch anferth i Gareth Roberts o Fenter Fachwen a fu’n helpu i ddarparu llawer o’r wybodaeth hanesyddol ac a fu, trwy’r Gymdeithas Enwau Lleoedd, yn casglu llawer o’r wybodaeth gyda’r chwarelwyr a fu’n gweithio yn Ninorwig cyn y caewyd y chwarel."

A peregrine survey by boat with high-quality photography organised by local BMC Access Reps Iain Peters and James Mann has helped to identify peregrine nesting sites so that a blanket ban on climbing at the Cornish climbing site of Carn Cowla can be lifted. A temporary ban had been put in place by the National Trust covering the cliffs between Tubby Head and Bawden Cliff, including major route locations up to and beyond the America Buttress. The ban has now been lifted so all sections are open, with only crag- and area-specific restrictions in place when necessary.
