BMC Land & Property Trust seeks new Chair and Trustees

The BMC Land & Property Trust - the charity responsible for the BMC's land and property assets - is seeking a new Chair and up to four Trustees to join its Board. These voluntary roles present a unique opportunity to help oversee the management of some of the UK's most important climbing and hill walking sites.
Since 1979, the BMC has acquired eight key climbing sites across England and Wales, representing sport, trad and bouldering venues. Formal ownership is currently split between the BMC Land & Property Trust (LPT), BMC Land Holdings Ltd, and the BMC centrally.
BMC-owned sites include:
- Bwlch y Moch, Tremadog (1979)
- Aldery Cliff, Peak District
- Stone Farm Rocks, Southern Sandstone
- Horseshoe Quarry, Peak District
- Craig y Longridge, Lancashire
- Wilton 1 Quarry, Lancashire
- Harrison’s Rocks, Southern Sandstone
- Crookrise, Yorkshire (2016)
Landownership and management are central to the BMC’s work. Responsibilities are shared between the LPT and the Land Management Group (LMG) – a team of expert volunteers from backgrounds such as geotechnical engineering, law, and environmental management.
ABOUT THE BMC LAND & PROPERTY TRUST
The LPT is a registered charity (registered charity no. 05611715) that holds and manages the BMC’s land and property assets for the benefit of climbers, hill walkers, and the wider outdoor community. It ensures that these sites are maintained, safe, and accessible, in line with good environmental and governance practice.
Earlier this year, the Trust adopted a new constitution and Operating Agreement, defining its purpose and relationship with the BMC. These appointments come at a key moment, as the Trust continues to consolidate the BMC’s property portfolio and strengthen its governance framework.
The Trust also supports responsible land management, conservation, and access improvements across climbing and bouldering areas throughout England and Wales.

- Working closely with senior BMC staff on property management, planning, and financial alignment
Applicants should have experience in one or more of the following areas:
- Land or property management
- Governance or charity leadership
- Finance, legal, or fundraising expertise

The role involves attending at least two meetings per year (online or in person), contributing to discussions by email, and supporting the Trust’s decision-making and strategic planning.
Applicants should bring relevant professional experience and a commitment to the Trust’s goal of maintaining and protecting climbing sites for public benefit.

- Woodland and habitat management
- The quarry industry
- Crag development and fixed equipment
