Toothill, Roberts and McArthur top qualification round of the 2025 British Boulder Championships

The opening day of the British Mountaineering Council (BMC) British Boulder Championships unfolded on the walls of the Big Depot Manchester, showcasing the best of British bouldering talent.

Senior Qualification

In the Senior Women’s competition, Holly Toothill claimed the top spot in the qualification heat, achieving four tops and five zones. The 2023 British Boulder champion’s near perfect performance saw a flashes on boulders one through four and the zone secured on problem five. Closely behind her is Olympic finalist Erin McNeice, who also finished with four tops and five zones. McNeice topped boulder one on her second attempt and flashed problems two through four.

Reflecting on her performance and the boulders, McNeice said: “They were pretty fun. I struggled with the last boulder, but the others felt okay.”

Rounding out the top three qualifiers was 2024 British Champion Zoe Peetamans.

In the Senior Men’s heat, Olympians Toby Roberts and Hamish McArthur tied for the top position. Both flashed problems one through four and took two attempts to top five. Hot on their heels is in third is 2022 British Champion and silver World Cup medallist Max Milne, who makes a reappearance following a two-year hiatus from the Championships.

Reigning men’s British Boulder Champion, Sam Butterworth, secured his place in the semi-final round in seventh position, keeping his title defence alive.

The top 20 in each Senior competition qualified for tomorrows semi-final.

U17 Qualification

Topping the U17 qualification rounds were Tom Bouwknegt and Imogen Lilley.

In the Women’s heat, Lilley is joined in the top three qualifiers by Lilyanna Bayne and Kaitlynn Fletcher, with the pair taking joint second place. All three topped problems one through four with Lilley taking the edge with on top on boulder five on her fifth attempt.

The Men’s heat saw the top three sail through the first three boulders, with Harveer Seikham slipping into third after failing to unlock the beta to find the top on boulder 4 but remained in the mix with a top on the fifth problem. Elsewhere on M5, Tom Bouwknegt and Charlie Wardrop had difficulty in unlocking the zone and both timed out before topping-out.

The top 12 qualified tomorrows semi-final.

The competition resumes tomorrow morning at 9:00 AM (Sunday, 26 January), promising more nail-biting action as the boulderers battle it out for the coveted British title.
