BMC announces GB Climbing Team for 2024 IFSC Youth World Championships in China
The British Mountaineering Council (BMC) can today announce the 18 athletes who will represent the GB Climbing team at the 2024 IFSC Youth World Championships in Guiyang, China. The event is scheduled to take place from Thursday 22 August to Sunday 1 September at the Guizhou Bureau of Sports.
18-year-old Jack MacDougall will compete in both the U20M Boulder and Lead competitions. MacDougall has shown immense potential this season on the senior circuit, finishing 32nd at the Olympic Qualifying Series in June 2024. At his last Youth World Championships in Dallas in 2022, MacDougall placed 6th in Lead and 5th in Boulder in the U18M category.
In just her second year of international competition, Iggy (Isabella) Rinaldi has already established herself as a strong contender on the international stage. This July, she claimed gold in both Zilina and Dornbirn at the IFSC Youth European Lead Cups. As she prepares to compete in the Boulder and Lead events at the upcoming Youth World Championships in the U16F category, 15-year-old Rinaldi is ready to build on her experience, including her 29th-place finish in the Boulder event at last year's Youth World Championships in Seoul.
Speed specialists Saveena and Kishan Fillingham, both now in their third year of international competition, will compete in the U20F and U18M categories, respectively. At last year’s World Championships, Kishan finished in 18th place, while Saveena secured 21st. Both athletes enter this year's World Championships following a strong season opener in Zilina.
Ahead of the Youth Championships, Michelle Forrest, GB Climbing Coach, said: “We are heading into this World Championship with a dynamic team of 18 athletes who are bringing a mixture of experience, energy, and excitement from an already successful season so far.
“The Youth World Championships are a key event for our youth team, providing them with the opportunity to compete against the best in the world and to develop their skills in a high-pressure environment. I am confident that this team will not only make us proud but will also gain valuable experience that will serve them well in their climbing careers.”
